How To Care For Your Artificial Grass

There’s no doubt that artificial or synthetic grass has its advantages. Firstly it always looks good, no matter what the weather (there’s no unsightly brown areas where sun damage has occurred). In addition it doesn’t need to be cut, watered, fed or aerated. In fact it really is the perfect covering for those looking to enjoy their outside space, rather than spend time working on it. Having said that it does need a a certain amount of care, although minimal. With this in mind, let’s take a look at what you need to do to keep your artificial grass looking in tip top condition.

Keeping it clear

Similarly to real grass your artificial lawn or outside space is likely to be invaded with debris such as falling leaves from time to time. This being the case you’ll need to keep it clear. Depending upon the amount of garden debris you get will depend on whether you want to use a simple rake and broom, or invest in a leaf blower or vacuum.

Controlling mould

Many of the artificial or synthetic grasses already come with a herbicidal treatment that controls fungal growth in addition to inhibiting any natural weeds that can sometimes pop up from under the grass surface. You may want to ask about this at the time of purchase and how long the treatment is supposed to last. If herbicide hasn’t already been applied, then you can purchase eco-friendly products for synthetic grass from many garden centres and specialist shops.

Fabric softeners

If you’ve ever wondered just how synthetic grass keeps it’s springiness not to mention softness under foot, then the answer is your common or garden fabric softener. A quick spray across the surface will see to it that your grass stays perfect at all times. In addition, it also helps to reduce static build up.

Water it

Okay, so I did say that you don’t have to water it and yes you don’t have to water it in the original sense. However on the days when the weather does get really warm you may want to give it a cooling light spray of water just to protect it from the damaging rays of the sun which can and will scorch individual blades. Having said that, some grasses on the market now are fully UV resistant and therefore perfectly fine without ever coming into contact with any water.

Obviously there are many different grades of artificial grass ranging from value budget through to lush prestigious but given the right care and attention, there’s no reason why your grass shouldn’t last for anything up to twenty years.
