2014 Flower Shows

In December sugarplums may have danced in one’s head. But in January it is the FLOWER SHOWS that plant lovers dream about.  These Flower Shows will soon open their doors to showcase the magic of flowers.  And the 2014 Flower Shows look like they will be winners.

You don’t want to miss your local or state flower show. And if you have cabin fever during this long cold winter, think about planning to follow the flower show trail around the world.

Every year this GardenLady gets to the Philadelphia Flower Show, which is touted to be the largest indoor flower show in the world.  This year’s Art Themed Flower Show, called ARTiculture  will run March 1-9th. To avoid crowds it is advised to come when the doors open or around dinnertime.

Macy’s 2013 Flower Show

This week TheGardenLady went to Macy Department Store’s annual flower show in Manhattan, NY. This year the theme is The Painted Garden.

Because Macy’s is doing renovation work in the store, this year like last year, they had the main part of the flower show in a tent behind the store. The tent is set up on Herald Square.  Luckily when I visited, the line was very short going into the tent so that when I got into the tent that was filled with flowers, I was able to get close enough to see the displays without much difficulty.

The photos on this post could be taken without too many people obstructing the view. I cannot imagine what it is like if the line of people were longer. There are so many flowers in the tent, there is barely room for people to walk around. And I was lucky when I looked at the decorated windows because there were not too many people surrounding them.  I was able to get close to every window display. Unfortunately the glare on the windows made it difficult to take photos of all of  these window displays.

March 2013 Flower Shows

March is big month to attend Flower Shows around the United States. These shows are a wonderful way to banish the grey or cold days before you can get in your own garden to start working or to get ideas for your own gardens. Even if you have no outdoor space to garden, it is a great place to see the newest flowers or get some plant related ideas that you can use indoors.  Garden shows are fun for all ages,  kids too. Many shows have special exhibits just for the children. (PS The shopping is fun, too.)

Make Sure that your Outdoor Furniture is Eco-Friendly

TheGardenLady enjoys going to various flower shows. She just recently attended the 2012 Philadelphia Flower Show and she wrote about her experience in the last post. When she visits these flower shows she often sees interesting exhibits of furniture made for the outdoors. And this has the TheGardenLady wonder about what wood furniture one should use when one is making furniture for the outdoors. Here are some of the questions that come to TheGardenLady’s mind: Is the wood that is being used to make the furniture eco-friendly? How do we know if we are buying wood that is on an endangered list? Or how should we know if it is best to use oak furniture for the outdoors or pine wood or teak?

Philadelphia Flower Show 2012

Philadelphia Flower Show 2012 by Knitting Zeal

I went to the Philadelphia Flower Show on Tuesday.

I had not really wanted to attend this year for a few reasons. One is that as much as I love orchids, these are not flowers that grow locally so it would not be much of a learning experience. I have no greenhouse and do not really have room to raise many orchids in my house- I do own about a half dozen. And from some of the advertising I had read, I feared the show was going to be more commercial than usual. But since friends wanted to go to the flower show, I went along.

The major exhibitor of orchids, I believe, is Waldor’s Orchids. I have visited Waldor’s Orchids Nursery in Linwood, NJ, one of the finest orchid nurseries on the East Coast. I don’t believe one can go wrong if you purchase orchids from Waldor’s Orchids. So of course, I was curious to see their orchid exhibit.

2012 Flower and Garden Shows

It is that time of year again – for Flower and Garden Shows.

An early one, starting on Thurs. Feb. 16th and running through Sun. Feb. 19 th is the New Jersey Flower Show.  It will be held in the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison, New Jersey 08837. If you have any questions I believe you can phone for up-to-date information, schedules and directions, 1-800-332-3976 and visit www.MacEvents.com where they say you can get two for one tickets.

Flower Shows 2011

It is that time of year again when Gardeners need to have their gardening spirits lifted by seeing flowers in bloom. This is the time for Flower Shows. TheGardenLady column wants to share some good links to locate flower shows near you or places you may want to travel for Flower Shows. The joy of seeing any flowers in bloom at this time of the year is great, but which do connoisseurs claim are the top 4 in the world?

Philadelphia Flower Show by kightp

Philadelphia International Flower Show – This is billed as the oldest flower show in the US as well as the nation’s largest indoor flower show. TheGardenLady has been to this show numerous times and the warning is that crowds seem to be getting larger every year. The least crowded time to be there is around dinner time when many people start leaving. The 2011 theme for The Philadelphia Flower show is Springtime in Paris. How romantic is that?
Tickets can be purchased in advance at PNC banks and Acme.  PNC has a contest to give some free tickets away.  See here.  Of course, if you are a member of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, you get free passes with membership. It is worth joining PHS for these tickets, their outstanding magazine and discounts at various stores.   See here.


Chelsea Flower Show – This extravagant show has flower displays that are absolutely world class. TheGardenLady has been to this show one time. One hasn’t seen crowds at a Flower Show until one attends this show. Unbelievable. TheGardenLady was advised to get there before the opening hour when the line is shortest and of course one is the first on the grounds. Good advice. Of course, if you are a member of the RHS, there is one day set aside just for members so that the crowds are not so horrendous.   You can join the Royal Horticultural Society to get discounted tickets if you know you will be going to the Chelsea Flower Show.  You don’t have to live in Great Britain to be a member.  Their magazine is outstanding, too.   See here.

Royal Horticultural Society Garden Hyde Hall Flower Show: Aug 13-15, 2010

Are readers of TheGardenLady blog going to be visiting England this month or do you live in England? Lucky you! because you have the opportunity of attending the RHS Garden Hyde Hall first-ever flower show this August 13 through the 15.  See here.

It sounds fabulous. Besides the displays there will be experts answering questions, plants and shrubs for sale besides garden items for sale. Wish I were there. If you attend, could you send TheGardenLady some photos and write something about what you thought of the show?

While at the show, if you have any time, you can also explore Hyde Hall which is a 360-acre estate with a diverse range of self-contained garden areas.  Because Hyde Hall is located in one of the driest places in England, a highlight is their Dry Garden featuring more than 4,000 plants representing 730 species and cultivars, developed to promote sustainable gardening techniques.  With the drought in so many parts of the globe this summer, it would be interesting to learn what Hyde Hall recommends.  TheGardenLady would love to know what is included in the 4,000 plants in this Dry Garden other than cactus.
