Searching for the perfect garden hose

Garden Hose by MoHotta18

I wish I could use a drip hose. I think drip hoses are the best for two main reasons. One is that the water goes where you want it without wasting water through evaporation or spraying overhead water on plants that don’t like overhead watering. The second is that once you lay out the configuration of the hoses, you do not have to do anything more than turn on the water.

But my property does not allow for drip hoses. So I have to buy regular hoses. And the strange way my property is, I have to buy longer and longer hoses to reach all the plants on my uniquely shaped garden.

Plant Diseases, such as Boxwood Blight

Boxwood Blight – Photo taken by Kelly Ivors

One of the frustrations with gardening is the number of diseases plants get. And with the changing weather patterns, we seem to be getting diseases on plants that we never had in certain locations or diseases that are new. TheGardenLady is not a plant doctor. She always recommends that if you see a disease on your plant, that you cut a good sized sample of the plant with the diseased part- cut it all the way back and include some of the healthy specimens with the diseased part when you take a sample- you want a a big sample. Take this sample to your local Master Gardener Office or to your local extension office for them to ID and tell you how to correct the problem or if you should get rid of the plant so that it does not infect other plants. They will also tell you if you should trash the plant or compost it. Some diseases you do not want to put in your compost pile.

They will ask you a series of questions such as the name of the plant. (If you don’t know it, don’t hesitate to tell them you don’t.) How old the plant is. What direction it is growing on your property N,S, E, or W. Any changes to the area where it is grown. Did it get any pesticides or chemicals on it- like ice melting substances? To make a good diagnoses it is best to have a lot of information.

Gardening gloves to protect you from getting pricked

deadheading by jendubin

When you are pricked by a rose thorn and your finger swells or if you feel you are having problems with a cut you got working in your garden, get to your Medical Emergency room. There are bacteria that can get into a wound. The physician there will treat you accordingly. This advice is for all gardeners, lady and gentlemen gardeners as well as children gardeners.

Everyone should always wear gloves when working in the garden to prevent problems. Get yourself a good pair of gardening gloves for your garden work.

The Yellow Woodland Poppy – Stylophorum Diphyllum

Stylophorum diphyllum, Celandine-poppy by Tie Guy II

A favorite woodland native that is happily almost taking over my front and side gardens is the yellow woodland poppy, Stylophorum diphyllum. I love this plant that a friend with a wonderful woodland garden gave to me.

The woodland poppy has bright, very showy yellow flowers that bloom heavily in the spring. It starts blooming just when the daffodils finish blooming to keep the spring joy in your garden. It also blooms sporadically throughout the summer and has a decorative, interesting seed pod. It is happy in zones 4-9. Woodland poppies are best grown in medium wet to wet, loamy soils in part sun to part and full shade. Plants will go dormant in early summer if soils dry out. Mine are growing in front of my Jack in the Pulpits and around my hellebores and hostas.

How To Care For Your Artificial Grass

There’s no doubt that artificial or synthetic grass has its advantages. Firstly it always looks good, no matter what the weather (there’s no unsightly brown areas where sun damage has occurred). In addition it doesn’t need to be cut, watered, fed or aerated. In fact it really is the perfect covering for those looking to enjoy their outside space, rather than spend time working on it. Having said that it does need a a certain amount of care, although minimal. With this in mind, let’s take a look at what you need to do to keep your artificial grass looking in tip top condition.

Keeping it clear

Similarly to real grass your artificial lawn or outside space is likely to be invaded with debris such as falling leaves from time to time. This being the case you’ll need to keep it clear. Depending upon the amount of garden debris you get will depend on whether you want to use a simple rake and broom, or invest in a leaf blower or vacuum.

The Benefits Of Wooden Garden Buildings

More and more people are discovering the benefits that a wooden garden building can bring. Not only is a well designed garden building an attractive environmentally friendly feature but it can be incredibly useful. In fact, once you’ve installed a garden building you’ll find yourself wondering how you ever managed without it.

Garden buildings can serve as additional room, solve your storage problems, and even add value to your property. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the many benefits of garden buildings, and why they make such a good investment.

Creating extra space

The house that once was the ideal size for you as a family may now seem rather cramped as your children grow and want to invite friends round, or need space to do their hobbies. A log cabin, summer house, or workshop can become a playroom for the youngsters, a den for teenagers, a home office or even a games and hobbies room. Alternatively, you may prefer to use it as your own personal retreat where you can sit and read a book or listen to some music. In short, it gives you, your partner, or your children, a safe place away from the house to disappear to.
